Loose Lay Mats for Commercial Use

Loose lay mats rely on a rubber or latex non-slip backing to grip the floor surface. The effectiveness depends on the backing material, the floor surface type, and the mat weight. On smooth vinyl, tile, and sealed wood, rubber-backed mats grip well under normal foot traffic. On polished or waxed floors the grip is reduced. For added security, non-slip underlay can be placed beneath the mat, or adhesive non-slip strips applied at the leading edge.

Standard rubber non-slip backing does not grip carpet, the mat will slide. Use mats with a carpet-grip backing (small rubber spikes or a heavily textured rubber surface that engages with carpet fibres) for installations on carpeted surfaces. Alternatively, mat tape can secure the mat edges to carpet without damaging the carpet underneath.

Replace loose lay mats when the non-slip backing shows signs of degradation, when the surface pile is heavily worn, or when the mat no longer lies flat. A mat with curled edges or a backing that has hardened and lost grip is a trip and slip hazard regardless of surface appearance. In high-traffic areas, inspect mats quarterly and replace on a planned cycle rather than waiting for visible failure.

Some loose lay mats are suitable for covered outdoor areas, porches, canopies, loading bays, but most standard commercial mats are not designed for prolonged direct weather exposure. UV degradation will affect most rubber and foam backings over time. For genuinely outdoor use, specify mats made from UV-stable materials with drainage holes that prevent water pooling. Weight is also a factor, lighter mats will blow in wind.

Standard loose lay mats are available in common rectangular sizes from approximately 50×80cm to 90×150cm. Larger mats are available for industrial use. Custom sizes can be produced by most commercial mat suppliers with typical lead times of 1–3 weeks. For large areas, interlocking mat tiles can be assembled to cover any floor area without a custom order.

Lift the mat regularly, ideally daily in high-soil areas, weekly as a minimum, and clean the floor beneath before replacing. Soil trapped under a loose lay mat can form a gritty layer that damages both the floor surface and the mat backing. In washrooms, lift mats daily for floor mopping and allow the floor to dry before replacing the mat.

Mats in fire exit routes must not present a trip hazard and must not obstruct emergency egress. Loose lay mats in these areas should have very low profile bevelled edges, be non-combustible or fire-rated to the required standard, and be inspected regularly to ensure they have not migrated into the path of travel. Consult your fire risk assessment before placing any floor covering in a designated fire exit route.
