Specialist Mats for Commercial & Industrial Use

ESD (electrostatic discharge) mats are used in electronics manufacturing, repair, and laboratory environments to prevent static electricity from damaging sensitive components. They are made from conductive or dissipative materials that safely drain electrostatic charge to earth. ESD mats are needed whenever staff handle printed circuit boards, electronic components, or other ESD-sensitive materials outside of shielded packaging.

The correct mat material depends on the specific hazard present. For chemical environments, identify the chemicals in use and cross-reference with chemical resistance data for mat materials, nitrile rubber suits oils and fuels, neoprene suits a broader range of chemicals, PVC suits mild acids and alkalis. For high-temperature environments, check the temperature rating against the peak temperatures at the work surface. If unsure, request technical guidance from the supplier before specifying.

Tacky mats are effective at removing loose particles from shoe soles at cleanroom entrances when used correctly. Their effectiveness depends on: regular sheet removal when the adhesive surface is saturated with soil; correct mat positioning so all footwear contacts the mat before entry; and use alongside other contamination control measures such as shoe covers and air showers in higher classification cleanrooms. Tacky mats alone are not sufficient for Class 10 or ISO 4 cleanrooms.

Specialist mat maintenance differs from standard mat care. ESD mats must be cleaned with ESD-safe cleaners that do not deposit an insulating film on the mat surface; standard cleaning products can impair ESD performance. Chemical-resistant mats should be inspected for surface degradation and replaced before they fail, as a compromised mat may offer less chemical resistance than its specification. High-temperature mats should be inspected for cracking or deformation after heat exposure.

Specialist mats can be used in standard environments but this is rarely cost-effective. ESD mats and chemical-resistant mats are considerably more expensive than standard commercial mats. They are engineered for specific performance in specific hazard environments, using them outside that environment provides no benefit and wastes cost. Use appropriate standard mats in non-specialist areas.

Many specialist mat types are available in anti-fatigue configurations. ESD anti-fatigue mats combine electrostatic discharge protection with ergonomic cushioning for standing workstation applications in electronics environments. Chemical-resistant anti-fatigue mats suit laboratory and industrial environments where both chemical exposure and prolonged standing are factors. Specify the combined requirement when ordering to avoid needing separate mats for each function.

Commercial and industrial premises have floor covering fire classification requirements determined by the building use and the specific area. Most commercial mat specifications require at least Cfl-s1 fire classification. Higher-risk areas, escape routes, and certain healthcare and public building applications require higher classification. Check your fire risk assessment and building regulations compliance before specifying any specialist mat for a regulated environment.
