Washroom Mats for Commercial Facilities

In commercial washrooms, mats should be lifted and cleaned daily as part of the standard washroom cleaning routine. Lift the mat, mop the floor beneath, clean the mat with disinfectant or washroom cleaner on both surfaces, and allow the floor to dry before replacing. In very high-footfall washrooms or healthcare settings, more frequent cleaning may be necessary. Never leave washroom mats in place for more than 24 hours without lifting and cleaning.

Drainage mats with open-grid or slot surfaces allow water to pass through to the floor drain below, preventing water from pooling on the mat surface. A solid mat in a wet room accumulates standing water that increases slip risk. Drainage mats keep the foot contact surface drier and provide better grip for wet bare feet.

Most rubber washroom mats can be machine washed at 40–60 degrees. Remove mats from the washroom, shake or rinse off loose debris, then machine wash with a standard detergent. Do not use fabric conditioner, it can leave a slippery coating on rubber mat surfaces. Allow to dry fully before returning to the washroom. Check manufacturer guidance for specific temperature and wash cycle recommendations.

Anti-bacterial nitrile or natural rubber with an open-grid drainage surface is the recommended specification for most commercial washrooms. Nitrile rubber resists the cleaning chemicals used in washrooms better than natural rubber over time. Anti-bacterial compound inhibits bacterial and mould growth. An open-grid surface prevents water pooling. Avoid foam mats in wet areas, they absorb water, harbour bacteria, and degrade rapidly in a washroom environment.

The top surface should provide grip for feet, particularly important when wet. The underside should grip the floor surface to prevent the mat migrating. A mat that is non-slip on the top but slides on the floor is a slip hazard in a different way, stepping onto a moving mat is a common cause of washroom slips. Specify mats with a textured or ribbed top surface and rubber non-slip backing.

Anti-bacterial mat compound provides the first line of defence. Beyond this: lift and clean mats daily, allowing both the mat and the floor beneath to dry before replacing; ensure the washroom has adequate ventilation to reduce ambient humidity; and replace mats on a planned schedule, even anti-bacterial mats will eventually show mould if left in permanently wet conditions for extended periods. Do not leave wet mats folded or stacked, lay flat to dry.

A washroom mat that is correctly sized, lies flat, and has a non-slip backing on a dry floor presents minimal trip risk. Hazards arise from: mats that are too small and curl at the edges; mats with squared edges on a slippery floor; saturated mats that have migrated from their position; and mats with hardened or degraded backing that no longer grips the floor. Inspect mats regularly and replace any mat that does not lie flat.
