Workplace Mats for Commercial & Industrial Use

Most commercial workplaces benefit from a combination of: entrance mats at all external entrances to capture soil and moisture; anti-fatigue mats at standing workstations; wet area or drainage mats in kitchens, washrooms, and any areas where floors become wet; and safety or demarcation mats at slip hazard locations. The specific products within each category depend on the volume of use, floor type, and hazards present.

Mats are not universally mandated by UK law, but employers have a general duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 to provide a safe workplace. Where slip or trip hazards exist, wet floors, hard surfaces, transition zones, matting is a recognised control measure. Risk assessments should identify where matting would reduce identified hazards, and the absence of appropriate matting where a risk has been identified is a compliance issue.

A mat maintenance schedule is the most practical approach, log each mat location, mat type, last cleaning date, and condition. Set replacement triggers based on inspection criteria (pile wear, backing condition, edge curl) rather than relying on visual appearance alone. Inspect mats quarterly and replace based on condition rather than a fixed time schedule. Indicators for replacement: the pile is heavily compressed or worn through in traffic paths; the backing has hardened, cracked, or is no longer gripping the floor; mat edges are curling or presenting a trip hazard; or the mat has discolouration or odour that does not respond to cleaning. High-traffic mats in entrances and at workstations typically need replacing every 1–3 years.

Vacuum regularly to remove loose soil before it is compressed into the pile. Extraction clean periodically, weekly for entrance mats, monthly for lower-traffic locations, to remove embedded soil and maintain pile appearance. Machine wash smaller mats where practical. For large or heavy industrial mats, in-situ cleaning with a scrubbing machine is more practical than removal for laundering.

Floor coverings including mats in commercial premises must comply with fire safety requirements for the building use. Mats in escape routes are subject to particular scrutiny, they must not impede egress, must not be a significant fuel contribution, and must lie flat without presenting a trip hazard. Check fire classifications (minimum Cfl-s1 for most commercial applications) and ensure mats placed in escape routes are reviewed as part of your fire risk assessment.
