Glass Cleaners

For commercial environments, a trigger spray or concentrated glass cleaner that leaves a streak-free finish is most practical. Alcohol-based formulations evaporate quickly and reduce smearing on windows, mirrors, and glass partitions. For large window cleaning programmes, a concentrated product diluted into a window cleaning solution with a squeegee and scrubber delivers a faster, more consistent result than spray and wipe. Anti-static formulations help repel dust between cleans. Always check the product label for specific information.

Streaks are usually caused by using too much product, cleaning in direct sunlight, or using a cloth that leaves lint. Use a microfibre cloth or a professional window squeegee rather than paper towels. Clean in an S-pattern with a squeegee and wipe the blade after each pass. Avoid cleaning glass that is hot from direct sunlight, as the product dries too quickly before it can be properly removed. Ensure the glass is free from heavy soiling before applying the cleaner.

Most commercial glass cleaners are suitable for mirrors, glass partitions, display cases, and glazed doors as well as external windows. Check whether the product is safe for use on tinted, coated, or anti-reflective glass, as some formulations can damage specialist coatings. For mirrored surfaces in washrooms, an antibacterial glass cleaner helps maintain hygiene standards between deep cleans.

Internal glass surfaces such as mirrors, partitions, and reception glass typically need cleaning daily or several times per week in high-use areas. External windows depend on the environment, urban settings with pollution may require monthly cleaning, whilst rural locations may only need quarterly attention. Glass entrance doors experience high handprint and smear soiling and often need daily wiping. Regular cleaning protects glass from mineral deposits and hard water staining that become harder to remove over time.

Standard commercial glass cleaners are not suitable for LCD screens, touchscreens, or display monitors as they can damage anti-glare coatings and seep into edges. Use a dedicated screen cleaning solution and a microfibre cloth for electronic equipment. Commercial glass cleaners are designed for hard glass surfaces and should not be used as a substitute for screen-specific products.

Always follow the product label for information on dilution, using an overly strong solution does not improve results.

Standard glass cleaners are not formulated to remove heavy limescale or hard water deposits. For limescale on glass shower screens or washroom mirrors in hard water areas, an acidic limescale remover should be used first, followed by the glass cleaner as a maintenance product. Regular use of a good glass cleaner after limescale treatment helps slow re-deposit by leaving a smooth, clean surface that water runs off more easily.

Commercial glass cleaners are available in concentrated formats that offer a lower cost per use than pre-diluted consumer products. They are formulated for higher-frequency use and greater surface area coverage. Many commercial products include anti-static properties to repel dust and reduce re-soiling between cleans.
