Food preparation surfaces require a food-safe sanitiser that kills bacteria without leaving harmful residues. Healthcare and clinical environments need EN-certified disinfectants tested to specific kill standards. Avoid abrasive cleaners on soft or polished surfaces, and always check compatibility before use on painted, varnished, or coated materials. Always refer to product label for specific information.

Effective disinfection requires two steps: clean first to remove visible soiling and organic matter, then apply the disinfectant and allow it to remain on the surface for the specified contact time, typically 30 seconds to 10 minutes depending on the product. Wiping the disinfectant away before the contact time has elapsed reduces its effectiveness. Use a clean cloth or disposable wipe for each surface to avoid cross-contamination, and always follow the manufacturer's dilution instructions. High-touch surfaces, door handles, light switches, reception desks, and shared equipment, should be disinfected at least daily, and more frequently in high-footfall or high-risk environments. Trigger spray surface cleaners are practical and efficient for regular maintenance cleaning of desks, countertops, and equipment. Ready-to-use sprays offer convenience but have a higher cost per use than concentrated products. In food environments, ensure the spray cleaner is approved for the surface type and use environment. A cleaner removes visible soiling, dirt, grease, and debris, from surfaces using detergent action. A disinfectant kills or inactivates microorganisms on a surface. For effective infection control, you should clean first and then disinfect, cleaning alone does not eliminate pathogens, and disinfection alone is less effective on dirty surfaces because organic matter can block contact with germs. Combined cleaner-disinfectants offer a one-step solution for light soiling but may not achieve the same kill rates on heavily contaminated surfaces.

In healthcare, food production, and other regulated environments, EN-certified disinfectants are required to demonstrate proven efficacy against specific microorganisms. EN1276 certifies bacterial kill, EN14476 certifies viral kill, and EN13697 tests efficacy on hard surfaces. For general commercial premises, EN certification is best practice rather than a legal requirement, but it provides assurance that the product works as claimed. Always check the technical data sheet for certification details before specifying a disinfectant for a critical application.

Commercial surface cleaners are available in concentrated formats that reduce cost per use versus pre-diluted consumer products. They are formulated for heavy-frequency use and carry Safety Data Sheets for COSHH compliance. Many carry EN certification for proven disinfection efficacy. Consumer surface cleaners are not cost-effective at commercial scale and lack the professional formulation and documentation required for workplace use.
