Hygiene Rolls

Hygiene rolls, also known as couch rolls, medical rolls, or clinical paper rolls, are used to provide a fresh, disposable protective surface in healthcare, beauty, sports, and clinical environments. They are placed on treatment couches, examination tables, massage benches, and physiotherapy beds to maintain hygiene between clients. In food preparation environments, hygiene rolls are used as a disposable wiping surface. Their absorbent, single-use design prevents cross-contamination between users.

Hygiene rolls are specifically designed for body contact and clinical use, they are typically softer, more absorbent, and available in wider widths than standard centrefeed paper rolls. They are produced to higher hygiene standards and are often tested for skin safety. Standard centrefeed rolls are designed for general cleaning and wiping tasks. Using a standard paper roll on a treatment couch is not appropriate as it may not provide adequate absorbency or skin comfort.

The most common widths are 50cm and 60cm, suitable for standard treatment couches and examination tables. Wider rolls are available for bariatric couches or broader surfaces. Roll length typically ranges from 40 to 60 metres, with longer rolls requiring less frequent changing. Choosing the correct width is important for full coverage of the couch surface without excessive overhang. Check your dispenser's compatibility with the roll diameter before purchasing.

Usage depends on the number of treatments carried out and how much roll is used per client. As a guide, a single-bed therapy clinic seeing 25-30 clients per day will typically use one to two full rolls per day, or 7-14 rolls per week. A busier clinic or physiotherapy practice with multiple beds will use proportionally more. It is best to track actual usage over two to four weeks to establish accurate reorder quantities and maintain appropriate stock levels.

Most hygiene rolls are made from virgin or recycled paper pulp and are, in principle, recyclable or compostable. However, rolls that have been used for body contact or clinical purposes should be disposed of as general waste rather than paper recycling, as contamination with body fluids disqualifies them from the recycling stream. Some manufacturers produce rolls from FSC-certified sustainable paper sources or with biodegradable packaging, look for these if environmental credentials are important to your procurement policy.

Hygiene rolls are widely used in food preparation environments as disposable surface covers and wiping material. They must be food-safe, non-toxic, and free from dyes or bleaching agents that could contaminate food. Catering-specific paper rolls are available and should be used in food environments. Do not use clinical or healthcare hygiene rolls in food environments as they may contain additives not approved for food contact.

Wall-mounted roll dispensers with a cutting mechanism are the most practical for treatment rooms, allowing single-handed dispensing without the roll unravelling. Freestanding couch roll holders are an alternative where wall mounting is not possible. Lockable dispensers reduce waste and prevent roll removal. Choose a dispenser compatible with the roll diameter and core size of your chosen product. Dispenser systems that hold a spare roll reduce downtime when changing rolls.

Commercial hygiene rolls are manufactured to consistent quality standards for body-contact and clinical use. They are available in larger formats at lower cost per metre than consumer alternatives. Commercial products are designed to fit professional wall-mounted or freestanding dispensers used in treatment and clinical environments. They are supplied in bulk case formats, and many carry certifications for skin safety and hygiene suitability not found on consumer paper products.
