Nitrile Gloves

Nitrile gloves have largely replaced latex in commercial use because they do not cause latex allergies, which affect a significant proportion of healthcare workers and some service users. Nitrile is also more resistant to punctures, tears, and a wide range of chemicals than latex, making it suitable for a broader range of tasks. Nitrile gloves have a longer shelf life and are not subject to the supply chain volatility that can affect natural latex. For most commercial applications, nitrile offers better protection with no allergy risk.

Nitrile gloves are available in varying thicknesses measured in mils. Thinner gloves (2.5-3.5 mil) offer better tactile sensitivity and are suitable for food handling, light cleaning, and examination tasks. Mid-weight gloves (4-5 mil) provide a good balance of protection and dexterity for general commercial use. Heavier gloves (6+ mil) are used for chemical handling and tasks involving sharps risk. Using a glove thicker than required reduces dexterity unnecessarily, whilst using too thin a glove increases puncture risk.

Powdered nitrile gloves contain a corn starch coating that makes them easier to don and doff, particularly when hands are damp. However, powder can cause allergic reactions in some individuals and may contaminate food, sterile environments, and electronic equipment. Powder-free gloves are the standard for healthcare, food handling, and most commercial applications. In most procurement specifications, powder-free gloves are required as the default. Powdered gloves are increasingly restricted in clinical environments.

Stock levels depend on usage rate and the nature of the work. A typical commercial cleaning team uses approximately 2-4 pairs of gloves per operative per shift. Food handling environments typically change gloves between tasks, potentially using 10-20 pairs per person per shift. Healthcare settings have higher usage rates. Track actual consumption over a two-week period to establish your baseline, then maintain a buffer stock of 2-4 weeks' supply. Case quantities of 100-1000 gloves are typically most cost-effective.

Nitrile gloves are widely used and accepted for food handling in commercial catering and food production environments. They are resistant to oils and fats, provide good barrier protection, and do not contain latex allergens. Ensure the gloves are labelled as food-safe and compliant with food contact materials legislation. Blue-coloured nitrile gloves are commonly used in food environments as they are visually distinctive and easily identifiable if a glove is damaged.

To put on nitrile gloves: wash and dry hands thoroughly first, pick up the glove by the cuff and slide fingers in, then adjust the fit. To remove: pinch the outside of one glove at the wrist without touching skin, peel it off inside out, hold the removed glove in the gloved hand, then slide two fingers inside the cuff of the remaining glove and peel it off over the first. Dispose of gloves immediately after removal and wash hands. Never reuse disposable gloves.

Nitrile gloves offer good resistance to many chemicals including oils, greases, and diluted acids and alkalis. However, no single glove material provides protection against all chemicals. Some solvents, particularly ketones and some hydrocarbons, can rapidly degrade nitrile. Always check the chemical resistance chart provided by the glove manufacturer against the specific chemicals being handled. For concentrated acid or solvent work, a heavier-duty specialist chemical resistance glove may be required.

Commercial nitrile gloves are available in large case quantities at lower cost per glove than retail packs. They are manufactured to EN 374 and EN 455 standards where applicable, providing certified performance data. Commercial products come with compliance documentation and technical data sheets. Consumer retail gloves are often lighter weight, available only in limited sizes, and not manufactured to the standards required for healthcare, food, or industrial use.
