Clinical waste bag colours follow the UK's colour-coded waste segregation system. Yellow bags with a black tiger stripe are used for offensive waste, items such as nappies, incontinence products, and sanitary waste that are non-infectious but require segregation from general waste. Clinical waste bags are used for waste contaminated with bodily fluids, blood, or other potentially infectious material. Infectious waste includes used dressings, bandages, gloves used during wound care, single-use medical equipment, sanitary waste from washrooms, incontinence products, and items from first aid treatment. General office or catering waste that is not contaminated with bodily fluids does not need to go in clinical waste bags and should be segregated into the appropriate general or recycling waste stream.

Any premises generating clinical or offensive waste, including care homes, GP surgeries, dentists, schools, sports facilities, and commercial premises with washroom sanitary bins, must segregate and dispose of that waste correctly under the Controlled Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2012. Compliance requires using the appropriate colour-coded bags, arranging collection by a licensed waste carrier, and maintaining waste transfer notes. Non-compliance can result in enforcement action and fines from the Environment Agency.

Clinical waste bags should be sealed securely before removal from the bin liner and stored in a designated, lockable waste storage area that is separate from general waste. The storage area should be clean, well-ventilated, and inaccessible to the public. Bags should not be overfilled, a maximum of three-quarters full is recommended to reduce the risk of split bags and spillage. Label bags with the date and site before placing in the storage area.

Collection frequency should be determined by the volume of waste generated and the capacity of the storage area. For most commercial premises such as care homes, dental practices, and facilities with washroom sanitary bins, fortnightly or monthly collection is typical. High-volume healthcare settings may require weekly or more frequent collection. Waste should never be stored beyond the period agreed with your waste contractor, and collection dates should be clearly recorded in your waste management log.

Clinical waste bags are available in a range of sizes, from 15 litre bags suitable for small bins in toilet cubicles or first aid areas, up to 90 litre bags for larger clinical waste bins. Match the bag size to the bin it is lining, overfull bags increase split risk and underfull bags are wasteful. For sanitary bins in washroom cubicles, a 5-10 litre bag is typically appropriate. Ensure the bags meet the required gauge (thickness) specification for clinical waste, thin bags are not suitable.

Clinical and offensive waste bags must not be placed in general waste collections. They require collection by a licensed clinical waste carrier. Mixing clinical waste with general waste is a breach of waste regulations and can result in prosecution. If in doubt about which waste stream applies to a particular type of waste, consult your waste contractor or the Environment Agency's guidance on healthcare waste. Correct segregation at source is the responsibility of the waste producer.

Commercial clinical waste bags are manufactured to comply with UK clinical waste regulations, including the correct colour coding, print specification, and gauge to prevent splitting during handling and storage. They are supplied in case quantities appropriate for commercial waste management programmes. Consumer alternatives, such as standard bin liners or nappy disposal bags, do not meet the regulatory specification for clinical waste and must not be used as a substitute. Using non-compliant bags could expose a business to regulatory enforcement.
